is the starting point for exploring the province of Natal and the Kingdom
of KwaZulu. This semi-tropical province is rich in traditional cultures,
Zulu, Colonial and Indian. The city, with its colonial architecture, was
one of the earliest English settlements. Indian culture is an important
part of Natal's heritage and includes colourful markets and temples which
contrast with the rural culture of traditional African villages where age-old
methods of building, basket making, crafts, cooking, dance and music are
demonstrated. Durban's beaches provide protected bathing and surf-angling.
